Makua remembered

Funeral arrangements for soccer legend Steve "Disco" Makua, who died in a road accident in the early hours of Saturday, are still to be announced.

Funeral arrangements for soccer legend Steve "Disco" Makua, who died in a road accident in the early hours of Saturday, are still to be announced.

Makua, the former Witbank Black Aces, Giant Blackpool and Orlando Pirates player, was returning from Middleburg when he met his death.

A close friend to Makua, Jackey Khoza, said the former midfield dynamo was "a man who did not want to see the next person suffer".

Orlando Pirates Academy chief Augusto Palacious said: "I am shocked.

"Steve was one of the people who warmly welcomed me to South Africa when I joined Aces in 1985.

"He led us to the inaugural Iwisa Soccer Spectacular in 1989, and we beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 to win the cup.

"I also took him along as my assistant to the Turkey football side Gencervilirgia. There we also roped in John "Shoes" Moshoeu and Fani Madida, through his recommendation." - Sowetan reporter
