The wage dispute which has resulted in construction workers at a stadium in Mpumalanga downing tools has still not been resolved.
The Mbombela Stadium Joint Venture, the stadium contractors and organised labour were still locked in negotiations yesterday following the stoppage on the site.
The strike, which is deemed illegal and unprotected, started on Tuesday morning, but workers returned to work later that afternoon.
It, however, resumed in full swing on Wednesday morning. Issues that are being negotiated include:
l Outstanding issues centering on the benefits for the Mataffin community;
l A R9 across-the-board increase for all workers. Currently, workers classified as artisans and above are being paid a R10 minimum wage an hour;
l That the human resources manager on the stadium site be dismissed; and
l That the department of labour conducts an analysis to determine whether the nature of the stadium contract is a building or civil contract.
"We are confident that the negotiators will resolve this impasse speedily to the satisfaction of all concerned," said Desmond Golding, Mpumalanga deputy director general for 2010.
"We wish to assure the public that we will do everything in our power to ensure that the construction of the stadium remains on track," he said.
