A programme is in place for pupils to help them know of fire prevention and handling general emergency situations.
The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) launched its first Basic Energy Safety And Fire Education(Besafe) centre in Berea yesterday.
EMS launched this initiative in partnership with Bic, manufactures of stationery equipment, the main sponsors.
"The centres will be places where the community and children are educated on fire safety and basic emergencies," said Rodney Eksteen, divisional chief at EMS.
Among the lessons to be offered to pupils will be basic fire-fighting, treating burns, traffic safety, water safety and stopping bleeding.
Other centres will be opened in Dube, Jabulani (Soweto), Alexandra, Orange Farm, Ivory Park and Florida.
"We have designed a special activity play to further cement the safety messages. This play will be performed in over 300 schools around Gauteng," said Eksteen.
The programmes will also encourage pupils to know the relevant emergency numbers for different situations such as in cases of fire, need for ambulance and crime reporting.
Eksteen said they were targeting children between the ages of 5 and 13, with the aim of having a future adult population that knew what to do in emergencies.
"Children can easily identify with the Bic brand, and with us being the biggest manufacture of lighters, we thought it would be good to bring awareness on safety," said Patrick Plunkett, marketing manager at Bic.
