Sowetan's nation building projects thrive on the partnerships that the newspaper has struck with other like-minded companies, institutions, organisations, the government and people.

One of these projects is the Telkom Foundation, the corporate social investment and responsibility arm of Telkom, with whom Sowetan is cooperating and collaborating on the Aggrey Klaaste Maths, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Award.

The project is named in honour of Aggrey Klaaste, the late editor-in-chief of Sowetan, who initiated it.

The nation building awards are part of the youth development and community development programmes of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.

Here are some of the Telkom Foundation's education and training projects - mainly promoting maths, science and

technology education, training and development for both pupils and teachers, as well as enhancing the public understanding and appreciation of these subjects:

l Dinaledi Schools, which involves providing technical support to the schools that are part of the national ministerial initiative to improve maths and science education, known as the nation strategy on maths, science and technology education and training in general and further education and training;

l I-Afrika Entasha - Supporting an initiative to upgrade learners' performance in maths and science at the I-Afrika Entasha Community Centre in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal;

l Rally to Read - Providing support for the purchase and delivery of educational books to selected rural schools;

l ReadRight - Supporting the production and distribution of the ReadRight supplement to Telkom Schools; and

l The Most Improved School Awards. The foundation supports the technology category in the Most Improved Schools Awards of the national Education Department.
