Taxi owner shoots 'assassin'

A Durban taxi owner yesterday shot and killed a suspected hit man after the intruder allegedly confronted him outside his home, police said.

A Durban taxi owner yesterday shot and killed a suspected hit man after the intruder allegedly confronted him outside his home, police said.

The taxi owner told police he believed the incident was related to a taxi dispute and that the intruder was a hit man hired to kill him.

Captain Debbie O'Brien said the taxi operator arrived home in Nazareth and came across the man standing on his verandah. The man allegedly opened fire and the taxi driver took cover, she said.

The driver then pulled out his own licensed firearm and shot the man, hitting him twice in the leg and three times in the head.

"The 30-year-old man collapsed and died," said O'Brien.

Pinetown police found a .38 special revolver with its serial number filed off, and five cartridges, at the scene.

No arrests have been made and police are investigating. - Sapa
