Lead singer of the popular mbaqanga duo, Soul Brothers, David Masondo, 56, was yesterday granted R500 bail in the Protea magistrate's court in Soweto.

Masondo, who is facing charges of assault and pointing a firearm at his wife of 17 years, Conny, was wearing a black suit and a blue and orange striped shirt.

Masondo's attorney, Victor Mashele told the court in the bail application that his client had no previous convictions and did not have any outstanding cases. Mashele said he'd requested that the case, originally scheduled for tomorrow, take place yesterday.

Magistrate Jajbhay said: "You are granted R500 bail on condition that you do not come into contact with the complainant and witnesses until the case is completed.

"You are also ordered to hand over the outstanding firearm to the investigating officer."

Masondo owns two firearms, one of which was confiscated when he was arrested last week.

Mashele said: "The family is planning a gathering, at the accused's house, on Friday to try and settle the matter. We ask that he come into contact with her on that day."

Mrs Masondo, however, did not know about the gathering but agreed to attend.

Jajbhay agreed and said Masondo would be allowed to have contact with his wife on that day.
