Strange as it might sound, the the country's editors are singing the ANC's praises.
The ruling party says it now wants the SABC to be independent and no longer serve as its propaganda machine.
Speaking to the South African Editors' Forum on Sunday, ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe confirmed reports that the party had told SABC CEO Dali Mpofu of its unhappiness at the "very factional role" the broadcaster had played in the run-up to the ANC's conference in December.
The ANC reminded the SABC of its mandate as a public broadcaster, as opposed to the state organ it had degenerated into being.
"The SABC is an independent public broadcaster, not a state broadcaster. It is not a mouthpiece of the ANC," Motlanthe declared to the editors.
Now, we wish we could take the new leaders of the ANC at their word. But, we are mindful of the fact theirs may just be the nice words of people who are hurting.
Lest we forget, the new leaders of the ANC, and the rest of us, also fell victim to the appalling pro-Mbeki government and party faction propaganda churned out by the SABC. The broadcaster, Motlanthe tells us, had merely buckled under pressure from the (Mbeki-led) ANC, of which he was the general-secretary.
May his words prove to be as genuine as the sweetness of their ring.
