A "desperate drug addict" who ended up buying Panado tablets for R100, believing they were mandrax, ran over the "merchant" in a fit of anger.

The incident happened on Saturday after the suspect drove to a house in Witbank, Mpumalanga, at about 12.30pm.

He allegedly sent Mduduzi Nkosi into the house to buy him mandrax pills. The owner of the house, Goodman Jeremiah Gulini, told Nkosi that he was not selling drugs in his house.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane yesterday said: "Nkosi told Gulini that there was a white man who wanted to buy drugs from him.

"Gulini insisted that he did not sell drugs, but the white man allegedly insisted the two men should help him get some."

Nkosi and Gulini then decided to give the "desperate" man two Panado tablets under the pretext that they were mandrax tablets.

The man allegedly paid R100 in exchange for the tablets.

Khoabane said the suspect asked the two men to accompany him in his car to a shop and while they were driving there he discovered that he had actually bought Panado.

"This made him very angry, and when he asked the two men why they had taken him for a ride, they jumped out of the car and tried to run away," said Khoabane.

"He chased them in his car and knocked one of the men down."

Nkosi managed to escape, but Gulini was run over and was seriously injured.

Gulini was taken to hospital and the driver was arrested.

The suspect is expected to appear in court to face a charge of attempted murder.
