ACCRA - Tim Modise has resigned as director of media and communications of the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), Sowetan has learnt.

The influential Modise is reported to have resigned on Friday.

A top soccer official close to the organising committee, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "It is true that Tim has resigned."

When approached for comment yesterday, Modise referred all inquiries to Danny Jordaan.

Jordaan who returned to Johannesburg from the 26th Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana on Saturday, was unavailable for comment.

Dennis Mumble, the LOC's general manager who also served as the general manager of the Kumasi host city venue at the Afcon finals, said: "I'm not aware of Tim's resignation."

Jordaan and Modise, who is also held in high esteem by the Fifa media and communications department, are likely to meet today where there is a possibility that Modise will be asked to continue serving the organising committee as a consultant.

Modise's absence at the journalists 2010 World Cup media briefing organised by Fifa's communications and media directorate on Friday raised suspicions that he may have quit.

Former journalist Jermaine Craig represented the LOC at the briefing.

Modise joined the organising committee last year after he was recruited at the recommendation of the board of directors. Before that he worked for Radio 702 and the SABC as a presenter of current news.

Modise who is one of the most recognisable of South African radio presenters, is a high profile media relations practitioner and was recruited to promote and market the World Cup activities.

Before he joined LOC Modise was chief executive officer of Proudly South African, a body established to deal with the marketing and promotion of South African products locally and globally.

Former CNN news reader, Tumi Makgabo, is the LOC's public relations and international affairs manager.
