Man of humour who stood up for his beliefs

Nicholas Modise

He was over six feet tall but his short fuse translated into a temper that left many quivering with fear.

Shima Moses Thokoane, popularly known as "Bra Moss" or "Madeke", was his name and he passed away on Sunday.

Woe betide anybody who crossed his path because, besides his short fuse, he also had an amazing bravery for standing up for what he believed in.

But he was also imbued with a great sense of humour that won him a lot of friends. People enjoyed his presence because he regaled them with stories of his prowess as an athlete.

Thokoane was born on May 31 1944 in Sophiatown.

He started his primary education at St Cyprian School before proceeding to Madibane High School in Western Native Township where he completed his matric.

He joined the Johannesburg City Council's traffic department. His understanding of the city's bylaws and court procedure won him the respect of many magistrates.

Thokoane then joined a computer company in Midrand.

He was a staunch and active member of his local church in Molapo, Soweto.

He will be sorely missed by his wife Kunie, son Cecil, daughters Meriting, Lebogang and six grandchildren.

Thokoane will be buried today at Lenasia Cemetery. The service will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Molapo at 7am and the cortege will leave at 9am.
