The compulsive eating of ice, including scrapings of frost from a freezer compartment, is called pagophagia. This strong craving for non-food substances is often associated with a deficiency of iron or zinc and usually disappears when corrected. If you crave non-food substances, such as ash, soil, chalk or clay, visit your doctor to ensure you are not suffering a mineral deficiency.
