"The Department of Social Development commends the leadership of the ANC Youth League for entering the campaign against substance abuse," said MEC Kgaogelo Lekgoro.
"It is our view that such a call will strengthen the fight against drugs and alcohol abuse."
ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula on Monday called for the banning of Sunday liquor sales.
"The ANCYL will propose that all clubs and taverns be banned from selling liquor on Sundays and their trading hours should be limited. They must close shop at 2am," he said.
Lekgoro said efforts to fight substance abuse was undermined by manufacturers and easy access to liquor.
"In our townships, unlike residential areas where the elite live, liquor is sold in almost every street. It is sold 24 hours a day to even underage children. We are also hit by billboards all over the townships advertising one brand of liquor or the other."
The MEC said there was a trend of excessive use of alcohol and dagga and "the disturbing matter is this phenomenon is on the increase among parents and children".
Mbalula said: "There is nothing sexy or fashionable about drinking from six to six. Going to a tavern must become a cool thing, not just to abuse alcohol." - Sapa
