The Young Communist League (YCL) has called for "free education" for poor students at tertiary institutions.

It also demanded an urgent intervention by the national Department of Education into the ongoing strike by students at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

The university was closed on Monday after yet another encounter between students and policemen.

Several students were injured when police fired rubber bullets and teargas. A female student was allegedly kicked and beaten by police and had to be taken to hospital.

The university will reopen on Monday next week.

The main student demands are that all outstanding student fees for last year be rolled over and that withheld results be released.

YCL spokesman Castro Ngobese said they believed that an answer to the problems at DUT is for the government to implement free education at tertiary level for students from poor backgrounds.
