A white man residing with his black lover in a township in Mpumalanga says apartheid is still rife.
This follows an incident in which black policemen allegedly assaulted him and called him derogatory names.
Carel Marx, 52, of Thulamahashe near Bushbuckridge, told Sowetan that his live-in lover, Nomsa Nkosi, called the Mhala police to intervene following an argument between them.
He claims that three police officers arrived in the early hours of Monday morning and made a lot of noise outside his house. Marx said he told the policemen to lower their voices because his three-week-old daughter was asleep.
"It was after midnight and my new-born daughter was asleep. The policemen were speaking very loudly in a language I did not understand because I speak Afrikaans. I asked them to lower their voices and this cop, Victor, started insulting me. He then punched me in the eye," said Marx yesterday.
"He shouted at me and said 'f...k you, shut up you stupid white a....e'. He also said Thulamahashe was not a place for whites. He swore at me in a way that made me feel he was discriminating against me.
"All the while he continued to moer me," added Marx.
Nkosi, however, told a different story. Though she confirmed that the police had assaulted Marx, she said he had actually provoked them.
"He is the one still practising apartheid because he shouted at the policemen and reminded them that they were black and he was white. He said no little black cop would touch him," said Nkosi.
She said she had called the police after Marx had arrived home drunk in the company of an off-duty policeman. Nkosi claims that Marx had then started abusing her.
"Marx and I have problems but they do not need a policeman to fix them. Marx and that policeman Jabu were drunk," she said.
Nkosi said Marx had always been abusive since they met in December 2006.
"I even opened an assault case against him after he had assaulted me while I was pregnant with his child in December.
"He had even threatened to cut my throat with a butcher's knife," said Nkosi.
Police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane confirmed that Marx had opened a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm against the policemen.
