Mbalula's 'fire' threat

Outspoken ANC Youth League president Fikile Mbalula yesterday repeated threats by the ANC to sack incompetent premiers and cabinet ministers.

Mbalula, who led the league in a successful campaign to secure the ANC presidency for Jacob Zuma, said the party cannot be held hostage by inefficient public representatives.

"The ANC cannot be blackmailed. If people underperform as public representatives for some reason, they must be removed, whether they are premiers or cabinet ministers," Mbalula said.

"If you are a premier or cabinet minister and you sit on your desk and study with a London institution and do not serve the people as per the mandate of the ANC, you will be removed."

But he dismissed as baseless claims that some government officials were worried about their jobs because they had voted against Zuma.

"Polokwane is in the past. This fear that is creeping in is the fear of underperforming people," he said. - Kingdom Mabuza
