Joburg sanctuary

Early on Saturday morning, as the sun rays kissed the morning dew, setting a pre-Valentine mood, I was awoken from my slumber by a soft kiss accompanied by awhisper in my ear for the first time in three years of my relationship.

Early on Saturday morning, as the sun rays kissed the morning dew, setting a pre-Valentine mood, I was awoken from my slumber by a soft kiss accompanied by awhisper in my ear for the first time in three years of my relationship.

My man is not the romantic sort. But the mood in room 407 at Mapungubwe Hotel was seductive.

Situated in Marshallstown on the corner of Anderson, Ferreira and Marshall streets, the up-market, four-star hotel is perched high above the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg's central business District (CBD).

Though situated in the CBD, Mapungubwe is a haven of peace and is designed to blend harmoniously with surroundings, creating a feeling of sophistication and luxury.

As we soaked in the beautiful romantic sights around us, our "honeymoon" was interrupted as the sky pulled its dark sheet over us. Within no time, chaos erupted as people ran for cover from the violent storm that left them soaking wet.

In the midst of the storm, the hotel was serene. The room created a peaceful and soothing mood perfect for a romantic outing.

The room, that boasts beautiful decor with beautiful curtains, lush suede cushions, chairs, fashionable furniture, a spacious marble bathroom, a fridge, stove and other essential appliances, created a home-away-from-home feel that gave us uninterrupted freedom and privacy.

The hotel has a fully equipped gymnasium that gave my soccer-playing man no excuses not to come with me. As he went to gym, I fed my appetite with sensual decor and glamour that surrounded me in our room.

After gym, I drew a warm bubble bath for him to savour. There were good-smelling bath bubbles and body washes to pamper.

After the bath off we went to an on-site restaurant called Black. Attached to the Black is a whisky bar that adds a sumptuous ambiance to a warm palette of the romantic gastronomic affairs.

Mapungubwe is a sectional title scheme that combines 91 hotel apartments with an additional 37 residential apartments. The hotel is a blend of modern lifestyle and history.

The Mapungubwe tale and tribe of Southern Africa has been adopted as the central theme and has been accurately applied throughout.

Top quality and tasteful fittings have been used and accommodation options include studio or one-bedroomed apartments.

The hotel also boasts a relaxing lounge, room service facility, a concierge desk, a fully equipped communications and business centre, Internet connectivity in each room as well as a swimming pool. It also has a 24-hour patrolled security, CCTV surveillance, safe and secure valet parking.
