Fed-up bus operators and commuters in Tzaneen are outraged at the Greater Tzaneen municipality's inability to move on the relocation of the bus terminus from a temporary site to the original bus rank in the Tzaneng Mall.
The bus terminal was moved to a temporary site towards the end of 2006, to make way for the expansion of the mall.
Commuters said they were annoyed because they have been forced to walk long distances to catch buses.
They complained that the bus terminal was situated far from the shops and their various places of work, and this made it difficult for them to start work on time.
The multi-million rand bus terminal was built by three bus operators, the Great North Transport, Risaba and Mathole Bus Services.
The three bus companies are operating in a highly congested area, a month after the municipality had indicated that the terminal would be relocated to its new location.
Commuters had recently met with municipal officials to hold discussions on this issue.
According to information released by the municipality on Saturday, various bus companies were supposed to have started operating at the new bus terminal on January 9.
Angry commuters told Sowetan that the municipality had said the process was delayed because 11 containers and kiosks still had to be removed because they would obstruct the movement of buses and commuters.
Spokesman for the municipality, Solomon Mokhashoa, said the relocation of containers had been delayed because the municipality was still waiting to get a forklift or crane to move them out of the way of buses in the terminal.
Mokhashoa said that the street vendors and the containers would be relocated next to the Gauteng-Tzaneen taxi rank.
"We have already arranged for a forklift to help in moving out containers, but it is taking a long time to get to this area." Mokhashoa said.
