Three Banyana Banyana players have secured trials at a top US team.
Veronica Phewa, Rose Jijane and Lena Mosebo leave these shores on February 25 to join FC Atlanta on a six-month trial. The three form the backbone of the national women's team, and the move suggests that though Banyana have not done well lately, their performances have not gone unnoticed.
"FC Atlanta are the fifth best team in the US. This is a wonderful opportunity for these girls who have contributed so much to Banyana over the years," an excited Fran Hilton-Smith, Banyana Banyana team manager, said. "A number of top internationals are also based there, and I'm sure the three will be signed."
Jijane made her debut as a 16-year-old 10 years ago at the first African Women's Championships, and the centre-back has never looked back."I saw her playing and knew she had potential. She and Bhudu 'Phewa] are the most capped players and Lena is recognized as one of Africa's best defenders," said Hilton-Smith.
