Matriarch Pityana mourned

Ruth Nomfimfi Pityana has died aged 84.

The mother of Unisa vice-chancellor Barney Pityana, she died on Saturday at St George's Hospital in Port Elizabeth after suffering a stroke on Wednesday.

Pityana was the founder of a nursing college at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane, East London and also helped create the first home for the aged in Port Elizabeth's Zwide township.

Pityana said his mother was "committed to her whole family".

She will be buried on Thursday. The service will be at St Steven's Anglican Church in Port Elizabeth at 9am. - Namhla Tshisela
