It doesn't rain but it pours for the Limpopo hospital official who was suspended for allegedly selling receipts for death certificates.

Robert Sibuyi, a senior administration clerk at the Philadelphia Hospital in Dennilton, was this week arrested because it is alleged that he has also been selling sick notes.

Sibuyi, 44, was suspended two weeks ago after a trap was set for him. He was caught red-handed selling receipts to families whose relatives had died at the provincial hospital. Sibuyi was charging people R400 for each receipt.

The people who were paying Sibuyi for the documents said they were not aware that they were entitled to receive death-certificate receipts free of charge.

Spokesman for the Limpopo department of health and social development, Phuti Seloba, said yesterday that internal investigations into the activities of Sibuyi had also revealed that he was selling sick notes to people who wanted to be booked off from work.

Seloba said that Sibuyi had been using a hospital receipt book with an official stamp.

Most of Sibuyi's clients came from Gauteng to buy sick notes, Seloba said.

"Based on the latest developments, we decided to press further criminal charges against Sibuyi because his activities had tarnished the image of the department," Seloba said.

He said that the department was also investigating further allegations against Sibuyi and would release the details as soon as investigations have been completed.

Sibuyi faces a second charge of misconduct and will remain on suspension until further notice, said Seloba.

He was released on R1000 bail pending further police and the departmental investigations.

According to Director Daniel Moenyane, the station commissioner for the Dennilton police, Sibuyi was also being investigated by the Gauteng police in connection with the scam in which he sold sick notes to people from that province.

The police in both provinces are working together on the case against Sibuyi.
