In business circles, Senkgane Douglas Leokana was known for his negotiating skills and hard work.
As treasurer-general of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (Nafcoc), Leokana worked hard for black business to be taken seriously.
His death at 68 years of age last week brought down the curtain on the life of a man who not only strove to be the best at what he did, but also uplifted his community.
Leokana of Kibler Park, south of Johannesburg, was a dedicated Nafcoc member.
According to his son Lebohang, Leokana died at home on Sunday last week after a short illness.
Born in 1940, at Maphoto Village in Limpopo, he later met and married Goitsemang Thekiso, his wife of 41 years, with whom he had three sons - Lekgotla, Mpho and Lebogang - and a daughter, Magofe.
He started school at Glen Cowie Mission School where he passed standard six. He then went to Pax Training College where he completed his matric in 1962.
He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Turfloop University in 1994 and thereafter worked in the family business.
He also served as the State Tender Board member representing small businesses in Nafcoc.
In 2000 he established his consulting firm, SDBL Business Consultants.
He played a vital role in bringing in the United States International Agency for Development( USAID) to South Africa, as well as an important role in bringing back businesses from the Commonwealth and other countries that had left South Africa because of apartheid.
Leokana will be buried on Sunday at West Park Cemetery after a service at Ebhareni Hall in Diepkloof, Soweto.
