Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
Lawyers for the Department of Correctional Services said yesterday that procedures in terms of the Labour Relations Act were not followed regarding the reinstatement of a doctor, Paul Theron, seconded to Pollsmoor Prison.
Norman Arendse told the Cape Town labour court the department wanted the matter referred to the labour appeal court.
Arendse also challenged the authority of the court to grant interim relief in favour of Theron.
Theron was allowed to return to work at Pollsmoor last year. He had earlier complained about poor working conditions at the prison.
Theron is employed by the Western Cape health department. Correctional Services has refused to allow him to resume his duties at the prison. - Sapa
