Petersen bail bid continues

The trial of Najwa Petersen, due to commence soon for the alleged murder of her famous husband Taliep, will not be completed this year, the Cape high court heard yesterday.

The trial of Najwa Petersen, due to commence soon for the alleged murder of her famous husband Taliep, will not be completed this year, the Cape high court heard yesterday.

Her defence counsel, Herbert Raubenheimer, SC, told a full bench of three judges that there were five reasons why her appeal against her denial of bail should be successful.

Raubenheimer compared Petersen's pending trial to that of Dina Rodrigues, who was jailed for the murder of baby Jordan Leigh Norton.

Raubenheimer said Rodrigues' trial had been scheduled for 16 days but lasted 18 months.

He said there were 50 witnesses to be called in the Petersen case.

He added: "The question is not when will the Petersen case start but when it will end."

If denied bail it was likely she would remain in jail for 18 months before her trial ends, he said, adding that the court had to consider this when applying the presumption of innocence.

The hearing continues. - Sapa
