The trial of four alleged robbers who shot dead a baby on her mother's back has been postponed.

Phana Muzwemhlanhla Makhanya, Menzi Hlongwa, Siphamandla Sigidi Gasela and Sibongiseni Phikani Ngidi appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on 14 charges.

The case was postponed to Thursday to allow them to consult with their lawyers. Their trial is expected to start on March 7.

During the shoot- out between guards and about 10 gunmen at the Bree Street taxi rank, Johannesburg, in October last year, 15-month-old Khensani Mitileni was killed and seven people were wounded.

Khensani's mother, Cynthia, 27, said: "I ran after hearing gunshots at close range. I felt wet at my back.

"I unstrapped her and saw blood coming from her left ear. I couldn't believe they had killed my baby."

The six other gunmen are still at large.
