Lamontville Golden Arrows were yesterday crowned the new champions of the Asiphephe Cup when they beat Orlando Pirates 3-0 at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.

The home side was in a mean mood and as they staged countless attacks against Bucs in the opening minutes of the game.

The game itself started at a blistering pace with players from both sides indicating their intentions of winning the match.

As early as the third minute, Pirates midfielder, Gerald Modabi nearly scored when his thunderous shot was saved by goalkeeper, Nkosana Maseko.

After the attempt, Arrows launched their own attack, with Papi Zothwane initiating moves from the middle of the park.

An influential Zothwane combined well with Thokozani Mshengu. Zothwane laid a pass to newly acquired Muricio Perquininho, but the Mozambican striker failed to beat Samuel Mojabi, Pirates' goalkeeper.

Pirates, who were dangerous when in possession, should have scored when Modabi played a long ball that found Jorry Morahe unmarked on the right wing, but the former Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder shot straight into Maseko's hands.

It did not take Abafana Bes'thende long before they penetrated Pirates defence, as Perquininho put his side ahead in the 43rd minute.

He capitalized on a rebound that Mojabi had failed to handle from a shot by Vumani Mavundla.

In the second half, Pirates introduced Happy Jele, Joseph Makhanya and Paulos Masehe for Merahe, Rhudzani Ramudzuli and Lehlohonolo Seema.

Zothwane finished off a good move to increase in the lead on 62nd minute. And Zothwane put the final nail into Bucs coffin when he rounded the goalkeeper, before slotting home in an empty net to make it 3-0.

l Chiefs beat AmaZulu 1-0 in a third place playoff in the first game.
