Racist killing kills our spirit

People like Fanie van der Merwe, "Sowetan reports racially biased" on January 22, about the racist killings in Swartruggens make me very angry.

When a young white man enters an informal settlement and mows down black women and children, it is clearly a glaring, abhorrent racist attack. Racism has been targeted worldwide by organisations such as Fifa and the Olympic committee, so it must be strongly condemned by the South African media.

People such as Van der Merwe and right-wing organisations such as Agriforum refuse to acknowledge the horror of racism without always looking for feeble excuses like wrongs against their own communities.

Condemn all wrongdoing unreservedly and we will have a better country. Imagine the calming impact if white farmers in the area had collectively gone to Skielik and apologised for the slaughter by a member of the farming community, perhaps even given a monetary donation to the bereaved families and helped with funeral expenses.

They would have been welcomed in an African spirit of reconciliation. Such gestures are needed to improve race relations, not denying the obvious or mud-slinging.
