Top managers at Eskom collected tens of millions of rands in bonuses, despite the power cuts and problems that have plagued the electricity supplier, says the DA.
"Eskom's last three annual reports show that the power utility's ability to supply the country with power has had little bearing on the amounts that senior executives are paid in bonuses," DA spokesman on minerals and energy, Manie van Wyk, said yesterday.
Eskom's top managers picked up R143million in this period, including R57million in bonuses.
"In addition to the current electricity woes, this time period also includes the ongoing power outages experienced in the Western Cape because of problems with the Koeberg power station," he said.
"It is surprising to note that while Eskom has encouraged the nation to save electricity, it has failed to use its finances wisely - spending in excess of R100million on under-performing managers, rather than on critical expenditure such as maintenance and the financing of new power projects." - Sapa
