The 2010 Fifa World Cup Local Organising Committee is planning to recruit about 15 000 people to serve as volunteers.

According to the LOC, the process of recruiting people for the quadrennial soccer spectacle will start soon throughout the country.

An announcement will be made once the dates have been finalised and adverts will be placed on the Fifa website and other media houses.

The LOC has also announced that they were planning to recruit in the region of 6 000 volunteers for the 2009 Confederations Cup.

It will not be starting from scratch for the LOC, whose volunteers' programme is led by Onke Mjo, as they already staged the first official 2010 World Cup event.

The World Cup preliminary draw, where more than 204 countries took part in Durban in November, was the first event of the historic competition.

The majority of volunteers who were recruited for the preliminary draw were from KZN to avoid paying transport and accommodation costs.

Tumi Makgabo, the LOC's communications and international affairs officer, said they will be targeting a variety of people with different expertise.

They will include doctors, nurses, lawyers, media practioneers, civil servants, students, unemployed youth and retired citizens. The LOC will also be recruiting foreigners and locals who are fluent in other languages. - Sowetan
