Two Mpumalanga men appeared in the Tonga magistrate's court earlier yesterday on charges of theft and possession of stolen property.
Jimmy Mdluli, 28, and Erick Mabaso, 30, were denied bail and remanded in police custody until February 8 pending further investigation.
The two are accused of stealing an electricity meter box belonging to the AFM Church in Naas Trust near Komatipoort.
After their arrest, they were found in possession of stolen electricity cables, allegedly stolen from nearby houses.
They were not asked to plead during their appearance. Police said they nabbed the suspects on Saturday following a tip-off.
"We discovered that the suspects were also conducting illegal electricity connections, charging residents more than R600 each for their 'service'," said head of communications at Tonga police station, Captain Amos Mashele.
Tonga police led the suspects to certain houses where they allegedly confessed to carrying out illegal connections.
Mashele further told Sowetan that a number of people have been killed in the Nkomazi area as a result of illegal connections.
"We will not fold our arms on arresting and convicting those involved in the electricity scam," said Mashele.
