A group of South African sports journalists and marketers who had passports and other belongings stolen in Accra flew into the country yesterday morning, using temporary documents.

The group was attending the African Cup of Nations in Ghana at the invitation of the tournament sponsors, MTN. On Monday the group was running around trying to get temporary documents so they could come back as scheduled.

In an effort to make their return to the country faster, an MTN employee is said to have collected all 20 passports for immigration purposes. When they got to the African Regent Hotel in Ghana, the MTN employee kept all the passports in her hotel room.

While the delegation was enjoying the opening game between Ghana and Guinea, an intruder broke into the hotel room and stole all the passports. Sowetan deputy sports editor Sello Rabothata was part of the delegation.

According to a police report the hotel room was broken into on Sunday night. Nineteen of the stolen passports were South African and one was British. A case of theft was being investigated, police confirmed.
