Think Mercedes-Benz, any Mercedes, and then think Smart.
At least this is what I think each time I try to put the two together. But it does not matter what I think, the fact remains that the two are an item.
Back to the car Mercedes-Benz SA wanted evaluated last week. The new Smart fortwo was launched in Sandton. There is not much to aspire about Smart fortwo, especially the base model Pure Coupé.
The Smart fortwo Passion Cabriolet is a good-looking creation. Granted, I understand the reason for the existence of Smart fortwo but cannot reconcile with its price. Maybe it is meant for trendsetters.
Why should I pay R130000 for a base model Smart if there is a car that sits four and is not expensive to maintain?
The Smart fortwo now has an uprated petrol engine. The three-cylinder engine has a capacity of one litre and delivers 52 kW or 62 kW.
All engines are linked to a "new automated manual five-speed transmission" from Getrag, which I found to be "not user-friendly".
On a positive note, the length of the Smart fortwo makes parking such an easy manoeuvre. The Smart fortwo cabriolet's soft top is an eye-catching feature. It can now be automatically operated and adjusted to any position.
This means that the rear part can be opened to its final position and closed again at the touch of a button. Unlike other cabriolets, the Smart fortwo does not have to be stationary for the soft top to be opened or closed - this can be done at any speed.
The roof bars can be removed and stowed in a special compartment in the tailgate.
Smart fortwo comes in three derivatives: the Pure, the Pulse and the Passion.
The basic Pure version has a solid roof while the Pulse and Passion models feature a transparent panoramic roof made of polycarbonate.
The new Smart fortwo is equipped with central locking and a radio remote control, folding driver and passenger seats back rests that can be adjusted with a notch lever.
It has an exterior temperature indicator, comfort windscreen wipers with speed-sensitive interval wiping, indicators with lane-changer function and air conditioning as well as electric power steering.
The Smart fortwo Pulse and Passion design lines feature a high quality audio system with a six CD-changer and an MP3 interface as standard.
On these models, alloy wheels are a standard feature.
The Pulse sells for R140000 while the Passion Cabriolet is priced at R156000.
