The attack on the judiciary by some members of the ANC should be read in the context of Jacob Zuma's pending corruption case. Now that the matter is in court, the possibility of conviction for Zuma is real.
His supporters will do anything to undermine law enforcement agencies and the judiciary. The public will recall how, after the conviction of Schabir Shaik, Zuma's henchmen Fikile Mbalula, Zwelinzima Vavi and Blade Nzimande pounced on Judge Hillary Squires without having read his judgment.
The indictment served on Zuma has exposed how Zuma has been bankrolled by Shaik to the tune of R4 million. His camp thought that Zuma would win all his appeals against the Scorpions and that such payments would not reach the public eye. The camp is now discrediting the judiciary and the NPA. After successfully discrediting the Scorpions, they are now concentrating on the judiciary so that people would see Zuma's case as political rather than criminal. That is why Zuma's supporters never discuss the merit of the case but claim a political conspiracy.
It is not because Zuma will not get a fair trial but how much he will be exposed. The new ANC leadership had thought it could thwart the case but the NPA moved quickly to indict Zuma. Mbalula and Cosatu then accused President Mbeki of colluding with the NPA.
