A 34-year-old police constable was arrested yesterday for allegedly killing his colleague and attempting to kill another in a bizarre shootout at Lenasia South police station two weeks ago.
The policeman was arrested at his parents' home in Evaton in the Vaal, police spokesman Inspector Trudie Wilken confirmed to Sowetan yesterday.
The constable was discharged from hospital two days earlier.
It is alleged that on January 11, the police constable opened fire on Captain Meshack Kalake, 46, killing him.
"We suspect that he killed Kalake after being questioned about his behaviour," said Wilken.
She said Kalake had apparently confronted the constable about his alleged drunken behaviour on duty.
The constable then pulled out his service pistol and pumped seven bullets into Kalake's body. The captain died instantly in front of his colleagues.
"After killing Kalake, he also attempted to shoot Senior Superintendent Skippie Scheepers," said Wilken.
She said Scheepers returned fire and hit the constable twice in the neck.
He was then taken to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg where he had been in the intensive care unit.
Wilken said it was not clear whether the bullets that hit the constable were fired by Scheepers or a shot had already been fired by Kalake before he died.
Kalake was buried on Saturday.
The policeman was arrested for an incident which left his colleagues shocked.
The constable was not placed under 24 hours police guard in hospital but was monitored closely.
He was discharged from hospital on Saturday and was only arrested yesterday morning.
The constable will not only face criminal charges.
"Internal investigations would also be conducted against him. Once charged, he would be suspended from his duties," said Wilken.
The policeman is expected to appear in the Vereeniging magistrate's court soon on charges of murder and attempted murder.
