While KwaZulu-Natal is still reeling form the massive power cuts caused by Eskom's load shedding, residents north of Durban are faced with possible water cuts as well.
The eThekwini municipality says that a leak has developed in the pipeline feeding water mainly to areas north of the Umgeni River.
The head of the eThekwini municipality's water and sanitation department, Neil Macleod, says in order to repair the leak the pipeline will have to be shut down for 48 hours from 8pm tomorrow evening.
"During this period we urgently request customers to use water sparingly to reduce the demand and thereby minimise the possibility of water interruptions," Macleod says.
He urges residents not to use hoses and to postpone tasks that require large quantities of water - such as filling swimming pools - from Tuesday evening until Friday morning.
He says with the current power-shedding exercise, water storage reservoirs that rely on pumping are already under stress. Hot weather conditions during the shutdown could aggravate the situation.
"Every effort will be made to fix the pipeline as soon as possible to reduce the possibility of water interruptions and pressure drops in the network," Macleod says.
