North West will host the Stop Crime Drama Festival for the eighth time in March.

Spearheaded by playwrights and stage directors Martin Koboekae and Julian Seleke-Mokoto, the festival was first staged in 1997 at Funda Centre in Soweto.

They later took the play to all parts of South Africa. The criminality in the country prompted the creative and visionary duo to highlight its folly and futility.

Today, amid rampant crime and almost perverse thuggery, the festival is still very relevant.

Dramatists Against Crime, Koboekae's and Seleke-Mokoto's production company staging the festival, is partnered by North West Arts and Culture Department, Sowetan (for the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation), Absa Foundation and the National Arts Council.

Auditions will be held at the Klerksdorp Community Hall in Klerksdorp on February 28, Taung Mmabana Cultural Centre in Taung on February 29 and Mmabatho Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho on March 1.

A developmental workshop for about 18 groups will be held in March. The 2008 Stop Crime Drama Festival will take place at Mmabatho Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho over three days, from March 27.
