DA insensitive to Skielik victims

The DA's reaction to the racist killings in Skielik shows no respect for the victims, their families and the community of Swartruggens.

Premier Edna Molewa visited the bereaved families and condemned the killings. Cosatu and the Human Rights Commission also pledged support for the families. In fact the whole country was shocked by the incident. I was also touched by Sowetan's cartoon of January 17 as well as its editorial.

Instead of condemning the brutal killing of innocent people by a racist thug, the DA condemned the protest and attacked the mayor of Kgetleng Rivier. People have a right to show their anger. The mayor was there to show solidarity with her constituency and the police did not complain that she interfered with the crime scene, as the opposition alleged.

The DA published a statement about the behaviour of the Skielik community and about inciting racial division. Is it because blacks were killed?

Where is the party's ubuntu? Helen Zille wants an urgent meeting with President Thabo Mbeki to discuss "the growing perception of a constitutional and moral crisis in South Africa". The DA should accept that people have a right to protest against the racial killings.

Ditshaba Makhate,
