Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency's chief executive Solly Mosidi has been sacked because of mismanagement.

Mosidi confirmed yesterday that he was relieved of his duties at the MTPA on Wednesday. MTPA is a parastatal under the provincial economic development and planning department. Though Mosidi refused to comment further, MTPA board chairman Lassy Chiwayo yesterday confirmed that the board was not happy with Mosidi's performance.

Chiwayo also confirmed for the first time yesterday that Mosidi's suspension last November was because of poor performance.

Mosidi was also accused of failing to suspend the agency's acting chief financial officer, Edward Thwala, when the agency could not account for more than R1million spent last year. Thwala was ultimately suspended with Mosidi on unspecified mismanagement charges in November. They were both reinstated without explanation a month later.

Chiwayo said: "When we suspended Mosidi, it was because the board was not happy with his performance, but MEC for economic development and planning Craig Padayachee intervened and ordered that Mosidi be reinstated until disciplinary action had been taken against him. So this is the result of that hearing," Chiwayo said.

Mosidi became MTPA's boss in 2005 on a five-year-contract.
