The gun-slinging teenager was convicted of attempted murder and given a suspended sentence in 2003 after shooting a black male.
Sophie Tema, a Correctional Services official who works with juvenile prisoners, confirmed yesterday that there were hundreds of kids in South African jails.
"I fight for their wellbeing and that they be treated like young children and be allowed to live under an environment conducive for youngsters," said Tema.
She said minors were taken to Dyambo, a place of safety in Krugersdorp, West Rand.
"I am concerned that when they come out of prison they have nothing.
"We need to start their rehabilitation in the juvenile prisons first," Tema added.
Most of these youngsters had committed crimes such as housebreaking and petty theft. - Getrude Makhafola
