A 15-year-old Ntuzuma girl is in a critical condition at Durban's King Edward Hospital after she was shot in both arms and chest by thugs demanding her earrings.
The incident happened on a dusty road at Ntuzuma township on Sunday.
Inspector Michael Read said the girl was walking near her home when three men confronted her, demanding that she give them her earrings.
When she resisted, one of them drew a firearm and shot her. They ran away without taking the earrings, Read said.
Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
