How do you educate a nation to abstain from or practise safe sex and then expose them to this kind of television for 30 minutes every day, with a repeat the following day? The soapie not only promotes promiscuity, but justifies the very behaviour that the government is trying so hard to change.
Consistency has a powerful effect. A young girl who grows up watching a very beautiful and successful Brooke Logan sleeping with all the Forester men without contracting Aids is likely to believe that HIV is a myth.
People must stand up and oppose all those television programmes that steal our children's innocence and expose them to a lifestyle we do not want for them.
Beyond entertainment, the SABC has the crucial responsibility of building a culture among our people. Few institutions have the opportunity that the SABC has, of entering our homes every day. We need to hold them responsible.
