The affiliation this year of Phalaborwa-Giyani golf clubs to the Limpopo Eagles Golf Association (Lega) will add much-needed impetus in the development of the sport in the province.
This is the view of Lega's spokesman Pat "Fingers" Moyaha who spoke to Sowetan yesterday.
"Obviously, we are excited and encouraged that we will now have teams from Phalaborwa and Giyani taking part in our programme in an organised fashion," Moyaha said.
He added: "In the past we had teams from these two areas competing in our matches but they were not playing in an organised way.
"But now the clubs from the two areas have decided to merge and form one club and we are looking forward to playing against them on a regular basis this year. We are going out on full swing to ensure that golf becomes a winner in the province in 2008," he said.
Other teams which are affiliated to Lega are Bakone, Pekwa, Mokopane, Makhado and Tzaneen. Lega's programme this year gets under way in Polokwane on January 27 and the provincial body will also elect new office bearers on the day.
Moyaha also revealed that their relationship with their Botswana counterparts was still intact.
Lega struck a deal with Botswana four years ago where the two parties agreed to play against each other yearly as part of development and popularising golf in Limpopo and Botswana.
Botswana golfers will visit Polokwane in September .
