A principal at a Soweto school is under investigation after he allegedly removed a subject from the school curriculum without the consent of the Education Department.
When school started yesterday, 32 Grade 11 engineering graphics and design pupils at Bona Comprehensive School in Orlando East had to attend geography lessons because their principal, Daniel Seshabedi, had cancelled the subject from the curriculum.
The subject was previously called technical drawing.
Johannesburg North district education specialist Reginah Chabedi said: "We have not given the principal permission to phase out the subject. We are investigating."
A teacher at the school said: "The pupils attended geography classes but they were not that enthusiastic about the lessons."
Seshabedi claims the school received a circular from the district office informing them about new curriculum requirements.
"According to the circular, our pupils would not get their senior certificates if they studied that subject only."
But Chabedi refuted this, saying pupils would still get certificates as long as they passed maths and maths literacy.
