David Quail, a Democratic Alliance member of the Gauteng legislature, led a tour of schools in the East Rand yesterday.
The day also saw scores of students returning to Katlehong Secondary School - which Quail described as the "worst performing high school in Gauteng".
Bryan Molefe, chairman of the school's governing body, was too ashamed to admit that his institution was placed dead-last on the list of 56 "worst performing" high schools in the province.
"I am very embarrassed. Out of all the other schools in the area, look where we are placed," he said.
When asked what had brought this situation about, Molefe pointed at pupils roaming about in the yard.
"The kids at this school do whatever they want," was his reply.
Quail was joined by Eden Park ward councillor William Jarvis, who said:
"Schools here are different to the suburbs. Here children do what they want. There's no discipline. There's vandalism and more."
