The missing camera belonging to the communications office of the Tonga police station in Mpumalanga has raised fears that police officials might be the culprits behind the suspected theft.

This assertion came after a supervisor of Joe Nkosi Construction Company, that has been contracted to renovate the police station, absolved his employees saying they knew nothing about the camera.

Police had allegedly accused the employees of having stolen the equipment after it went missing from the station's safe between November 21 and 22 last year.

Fakazi Shongwe, the construction company's supervisor, told Sowetan that the police were the ones responsible for the disappearance of the missing camera since it disappeared from their safe.

"The police are the ones that 'stole' the camera and not my employees.

"My employees never had access to the safe's keys, so there is just no way that they might have stolen it," said Shongwe on Sunday.

Tonga police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi confirmed that a theft case was being investigated regarding the missing camera.

"I cannot reveal whether or not we have any suspects because investigations are still at a crucial stage at the moment," Nyambi said.

He said the camera was used by his office to take pictures of exhibits and crime scenes. It was also used for media purposes.

Nyambi said the Canon camera was worth R4000. He asked anyone with information to call Tonga police at 013-780-3144.
