A council meeting in Maquassi, North West, turned ugly at the weekend when an expelled ward councillor was stabbed twice in the head.
Zandisile Mweli, 32, was stabbed outside the local police station after a community feedback meeting where his expulsion was announced to the community had been disrupted.
He was taken to the Wolmaransstad Hospital.
Thomas Ntuli, 36, and Itumeleng Motsemme, 32, were arrested for the stabbing and charged with assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
They appeared in the Wolmaransstad magistrate's court yesterday and were released on R1000 bail each.
The two will appear in court again next month.
North West police spokesman, Louis Jacobs, said Ntuli and Motsemme in return also opened a case of assault against Mweli.
"We don't know who hit who, but the two were arrested for assault. They have also opened a case against Mweli," said Jacobs.
Maquassi Hills mayor, Thabapelo Lehloo, said two groups had differed on what Mweli's fate should be and his supporters disrupted the meeting.
Lehloo said the group that did not want Mweli in the council went to report a case of disruption to the police, but Mweli, who was already at the police station, confronted some of the people.
"Mweli actually started the fight," said Lehloo.
He said Mweli was expelled from the council because he had missed more than three council meetings.
"On December 14, the local council decided to expel him and the feedback meeting was held on Saturday.
"He knew about the resolution to expel him. I don't know why his supporters were fighting."
