A 27-year-old forecourt attendant escaped death when a group of gunmen fired a hail of bullets in his direction at a Caltex service station in Phoenix, north of Durban, yesterday.

Eric Myeza was filling up a customer's vehicle when suddenly another vehicle sped past the station, spraying several bullets.

While everybody was running for cover, customers and fellow employees, Myeza was shot in the leg.

A witness who was at the service station at the time said Myeza was able to run to safety with a bullet in his leg.

"He was lucky that he only sustained one wound in the leg. We all ran for cover,. There were bullets everywhere," he said.

The witness said he was too frightened to move and unable to see how many assailants were in the car.

Police spokesman Michael Reed said the incident happened just before 2am when occupants of a white Opel Monza allegedly drove past and started firing shots.

Reed said Myeza was struck in the leg and rushed to a local hospital where he is reportedly in a stable condition.

"At this stage, the motive for the shooting is unknown and the identity of the suspects has not as yet been established. A case of attempted murder is being investigated," he said.

l Meanwhile, police have launched a massive search for the robbers who allegedly blew up an Ithala Bank ATM in Empangeni on Sunday. The robbers allegedly fled with an undisclosed amount of cash from the machine.

Police yesterday said they were following up good leads that might lead to arrests soon.

Police spokesman Muzi Mngomezulu said he could not reveal what leads and tip-offs they were following as it would interfere with their investigations.

"At this stage, we do not know how many men were involved.

"The Durban organised crime unit is working closely with the police in the area to trace the robbers," he said.
