Just-Ice back on Kaya FM

The news that top breakfast DJ Justice "Just-Ice" Ramahlola is joining Kaya FM again, after five years of radio wilderness, should come as a relief to early-morning radio listeners.

There was a time when early programmes, particularly on stations aimed at urban black radio audiences, were such a pleasure.

Those were the days when Bob Mabena was a breakfast show host at Kaya FM and Metro FM.

Then Just-Ice came into the picture. These two certainly have no rivals on morning radio. The other breakfast show hosts are doing their best to entertain but they don't strike the right chord.

The absence of Mabena and Just-Ice left a gap that no one has managed to fill. Understandably, asking anyone to replace them is almost like asking anyone at Yfm to be like the late young breakfast show host DJ Khabzela. Difficult.

But for fans of Just-Ice: he'll be back. Kaya FM has confirmed that from next Saturday he will be in the hot seat for the 6 to 9am slot on Saturdays, and will host the 12 to 3pm slot on Sundays.

The former Metro FM breakfast host is tipped to eventually host the breakfast show on Kaya FM.

Actually that is where he belongs, unless Kaya FM, which says it is talking to other people, can find a host as good as Just-Ice.

The station is not willing to shed more light on who the fronts for the breakfast slot are.

Neil Johnson, Kaya FM programme manager, told Sowetan last week: "Yes, Just-Ice, a vastly experienced DJ, is rejoining Kaya FM for the weekend slot. As to whether he is one of the people we are negotiating with to host the breakfast show, I can't say. We are currently talking to a number of people. We will make an announcement about that in the first quarter of this year."

The breakfast slot at Kaya became vacant late last year when its former host Pat Cash was unceremoniously booted out following disagreements with management.

Ironically, Just-Ice left Metro FM about five years ago after acrimonious disagreements with the station's management. He then joined Igagasi FM in Durban which has a low profile compared with his previous station.

Last year when he left the station there were rumours that he was rejoining Metro FM as a breakfast host at the instigation of the head of commercial broadcasting at the SABC, Bob Mabena.

That did not materialise as negotiations are said to have stalled.
