Phineas Khosa, 83, whose gun was used by 18-year-old Kaya Mavasa to kill herself because she thought she had failed matric, will now be charged with negligence.

But no charges will be brought against her brother who phoned her and told her she had failed. It is alleged Mavasa took out Khosa's - her uncle's - firearm lst Friday and shot herself. It was later discovered that she had in fact passed.

Police spokesman Mohale Ramatseba confirmed yesterday that Khosa had been warned that he would be charged with negligent handling of a firearm once investigations are completed. He said they would not charge the brother though.

Kaya, a student at John Mbhendle High School at Shihosani village, Malamulele, killed herself after being told she had failed matric.

Ramatseba said yesterday: "We are not going to charge the brother. He only allegedly phoned his sister after failing to see her name in the newspapers and that's it."

Meanwhile, Mavasa will be buried tomorrow at Mdabula village near Giyani.
