Hlengiwe Msomi badly wanted to bid farewell to her late mother Makhosi Mqadi, her cousin Mandisa and grandmother Virginia Msomi at a memorial service yesterday .
But minutes into the service, she had to be rushed back to hospital in pain. She had been discharged from hospital barely 24 hours earlier.
Msomi, 17, a matric student from Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal, was discharged from Mahatma Ghandi Hospital on Wednesday after doctors thought she was fit to attend the memorial service.
Just before the matric results were announced, she and her mother, grandmother and cousin were shot by her stepfather Wiseman Mqadi, who later committed suicide. She and her other cousin, Nompilo, survived.
Msomi learnt she had passed matric from her hospital bed. Her cousin's baby, who was also shot, is recovering in hospital.
At yesterday's memorial service, she nearly collapsed and experienced breathing problems.
After complaining of chest pains, she was rushed to King Edward Hospital VIII where she was admitted.
Through her pain and tears, she said she was looking forward to studying Criminology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
"But now I hurt so badly. I hope my wounds would heal in time," she cried.
Her uncle, Sifiso Dlamini, said Msomi looked better when she was discharged, but her condition deteriorated that evening.
"We could not sleep the whole night. She had difficulty breathing and complained about the pains," he said.
Now the family hopes she will be fit enough to attend her mother's funeral at the weekend.
Speakers yesterday described Msomi's grandmother as a woman who "dedicated her whole life to Christianity and the community".
She was described as a "treasure and mother of the local Methodist Church". Mqadi was described as a "humble woman who loved her children dearly".
eThekwini Municipality Speaker James Nxumalo called on the government to enforce anti gun laws. "It is time that guns were taken away from each and every civilian and only provided to the police and soldiers."
