Controversy has engulfed the official opening of new residential flats in Roodepoort on the West Rand.
Some applicants in the new housing project administered by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) - a housing unit of the City of Johannesburg - have complained that officials allocating the units are biased.
Felicity Modzanane, who applied for a two-bedroom unit in November, alleged yesterday that she had not been allocated a unit though she met all the requirements and had been placed ninth on the official waiting list.
"I met all the requirements: an ID, payslip, proof of residence and bank statements. I earn R6420, which is only R80 short of the two-bedroom. But at least I still qualify for a single room. People who can easily qualify for bonded houses have been allocated units."
She said Joshco officials had told her they would call her when the allocation process started. She showed Sowetan an SMS allegedly sent by Joshco. An incomplete telephone number was part of it. The message reads: "Good-day, Joshco thanks you for your application to rent a flat in Roodepoort. Unfortunately your application has been unsuccessful. For more information contact (011)4." The message was sent on December 21 at 9.30am.
Several attempts to get comment from Joshco were unsuccessful.
